Science

Science & Children, NSTA

upcoming topics:

Measurement: October 2006, Deadline: May 15, 2006

Measurement is often an orphanwith connections to all content areas (like social studies and math) but without a home in any. Measurement tends to be a common way to integrate content areas, yet American students do particularly badly in measurement on state, national, international tests. Share the effective ways you teach measurement and its importance in science. Also consider the types of things we measure in addition to length, mass, and area. How could students measure, for example, the health of a pond or the amount of light hitting the ground?

Reading and Science: November 2006, Deadline: July 1, 2006

It used to be that the only access K12 students had to science was through reading texts. As we moved to more investigative science, we inadvertently de-emphasized reading in science classes. Now, it’s time to revisit the contribution reading makes to learning science. Submit your tested ways in which reading can be incorporated into investigative, inquiry-based science learning.

Earth Science: December 2006, Deadline: August 1, 2006

We live on planet Earth but don't teach much about it, especially at the elementary level. Not after this issue. Whether presenting a complete unit or a shorter lesson that is part of a larger whole, we will publish the best manuscripts that describe how you explore various Earth science concepts with your students.

  • Submission guidelines:
      • What to Submit and Writing Tips
    • Effective inquiry activities that are original and creative
    • Interdisciplinary science experiences
    • Successful partnerships or programs
    • Themes of current issues in elementary science education

In your article, share the complete experience, including what you did, what worked, and what didn’t. When describing an activity, identify its place in the curriculum, the appropriate grade level, assessment techniques, and any safety considerations. Include how the activity addresses current science standards. Tell us what students were wondering about that led you to conduct the activity. What did students say as they conducted the activity? What changes will you make to the activity in the future?
When describing a successful partnership or program, give complete details. How was the program set up? Why was it begun? What are its goals? What were students’ reactions as they participated? With these suggestions in mind, you may soon be among S&C’s published authors.  More information available at http://nsta.org/162.

Science Scope, NSTA

Improving Practice—September, Deadline: April 30, 2006
Teaching is a complex process, requiring constant learning, reflecting and refining of practices on the part of teachers. Share your tips for staying enthusiastic about teaching and keeping current with the latest instructional strategies and science content. What opportunities, networks, program or institutes have been helpful in improving your practice and sustaining your intellectual professional development? What roles do the Internet, feedback from supervisors and attendance of science education conferences play in shaping or refining how you teach? Have you successfully used self-reflection tools such as journals, portfolios, or videotaping? Have you done any classroom based action research or participated in study groups, peer coaching or mentoring to gain insight into your teaching? Where do get information to design new activities or revise old ones?

Characteristic Properties—October, Deadline: May 31, 2006
What approach do you use to get students to understand the significance of the characteristic properties of substances? Tell us how you incorporate inquiry-based activities into the teaching of these properties? How do you lead students to differentiate between chemical and physical properties? What activities teach students to recognize the limits of these properties as well as their usefulness in identifying and classifying matter and in separating mixtures? Share your favorite strategies to show students how builders, engineers, scientists, product designers, and others must take these properties into consideration in their work?

Technological Design—November, Deadline: June 30, 2006
Middle school students should understand the similarities, differences and relationships between science and technology. Asking them to use familiar science concepts to design products to meet a human need or to solve a problem is an excellent instructional strategy to achieve this understanding. Share your best construction, design or problem solving activities with our readers. Examining how everyday technological objects and systems operate will let students see the role of technology in their lives as well as understand the science behind the products. What are some easy to use products for such a lesson and with what science content do you use them? How do you develop and assess the specific abilities and concepts that underline technological design as outlined by the National Science Education Standards on page 165–166?
